A
Stilts can simply be defined as a vertical set of steps. The vertical members of a rigid
Stilts are called stiles and the steps of a
Stilts are called rungs. There are two forms of
Stilts found (a) Rigid
Stilts –
Stilts that can be leaned against a vertical surface such as a wall, (b) Rope
Stilts –
Stilts that are hung from the top. Generally, rigid
Stilts are portable. However, some types are permanently fixed to buildings. Such rigid
Stilts are made up of steel or iron, as they should be strong and durable. Rigid
Stilts can be found in various forms such as (1) a Fixed
Stilts – that consists of two stiles joined by some rungs having no parts, and (2) an Extension
Stilts – that is a fixed
Stilts divided into three or four parts making it more portable. The lengths can be easily slid together for storage purposes and slid apart to maximize the length of the
Stilts. Also, at times a pulley system is attached to the
Stilts to extend the length by an operator on the ground. At third kind (3) is the Step
Stilts – this is attached in the middle to form an inverted V and consists of stands at the bottom to keep the two halves at a fixed angle. (4) The Telescopic
Stilts – the stiles of these are short in length and have concentric tubing that can be slid inside each other for storage purposes. (4) A Roof
Stilts – is a rigid
Stilts with a big hook at the top for gripping the ridge of a pitched roof. A Hook
Stilts – this is mostly used by firefighters and it has a hook at the top to grip a windowsill. (6) The Turntable
Stilts – this is an extension
Stilts that is fitted to a rotating platform, and is mostly employed on top of a fire truck. Rigid
Stilts were initially made of wood but later it was realized that aluminum is a better material for it because it is durable and has fewer reactions with weather conditions.
