The following information on stilts has been provided by Chris Lucas HSE Inspector.

The HSE line on stilts is that they can be used but this should only be undertaken if other solutions in line with the work at height regulations are not reasonably practicable, eg platforms. If using them people must be aware of the following issues:

• There is an increased tripping risk associated with their use.
• Consequently floor areas must be completely clear.
• Adequate provision must be made for suitable seating so that the operatives can put on or take off the stilts.
• The stilts will need to be appropriately maintained (as outlined in our safety page).
• If the work is taking place adjacent to any area where there is a falls risk, the edge protection will need to be raised to take account of the stilt height.

For further advice or interpretation on this subject you will need to speak to your enforcing authority for health and safety. Under the Health and Safety (Enforcing Authorities) Regulations 1998, this depends upon the nature of the activities carried out at your workplace.
